My review of the movie Detroit

Detroit movie posterLet me start this off by telling you that you need to see the movie Detroit. It is an excellent movie. Excellent is an understatement but that is all I got. This movie about the events that happened during the rebellion of 1967 in Detroit will leave you with an understanding of how we got to that point and how little has changed since then. Here we are, 50 years later and very, very little has changed.
This is an event that I knew nothing about and a movie I was not going to see. Had it not been for my co-worker and fellow disc jockey, Marjon Parham, I would not have watched the movie much less gone to the premiere. To say that she did me a service is an understatement. I was wowed by the acting, the directing and I am incredibly impressed with how deftly the writers wove themes of white privilege, oppression of African-Americans, police brutality and what happens when power is unchecked into this story.
I don’t want to tell you what happens in the movie. This is one you must see for yourself but when you do see it I challenge you to converse with others who have seen the movie and have an honest dialogue about race relations in America. I hope that it will bring about some positive change.
